How pests can impact your health

B&B Exterminating Blog

Everyone agrees that household pests are annoying, but few people are aware of the health risks associated with infestation.

Here’s a rundown of the most common offenders and the problems they can pose for humans.

It’s rare for squirrels, racoons and other large rodents to carry rabies, but you never know. Don’t attempt to handle or trap these animals on your own.

Rats are significantly more threatening. Bites and scratches expose humans to a number of diseases. Coming in contact with rat urine or droppings may result in liver or kidney failure. Just inhaling the waste is dangerous.

Rats’ fondness for gnawing on electrical wiring has sparked many a fire.

Signs of trouble include droppings, chew marks, paths of flattened grass and dark smears along baseboards or lower walls.

Ordinary houseflies are suspected of transmitting up to 65 serious diseases like typhoid fever, dysentery and cholera.

As most picnickers know, uncovered food is very enticing to flies. They also gravitate to trash cans, pet feces and decaying matter. They pick up poisonous bacteria, and any food items or utensils that they land on are contaminated.

Flies are more than just disgusting. They’re dangerous.

Roaches leave trails of bacteria-laden waste. You could be exposed to staphylococcus, streptococcus or food-poisoning agents such as salmonella. Their saliva, feces and shed body parts are known to trigger allergies or asthma.

If you spot even one roach, you’ve most likely got a problem. These critters are community-oriented, and they communicate well.

Stinging Insects

As pollinators, bees and wasps do far more harm than good. Most species just want to be left alone to go about their business, so they rarely sting unless their hives or nests are threatened. However, bee and wasp stings in allergic people can be serious or even fatal.

Fire ants, on the other hand, are aggressive even without provocation. They attack in great numbers, and bites are excruciatingly painful.

Mosquitoes are undoubtedly the most dangerous creatures on earth.

Malaria, a deadly mosquito-borne disease, is rare and largely travel-related in the U.S., but up to 600 million cases occur worldwide each year. Americans are more likely to contract West Nile virus, Zika virus, yellow fever or some forms of encephalitis.

Mosquitoes can breed in ridiculously small amounts of standing water. Any spot that regularly collects water is attractive to them.
