Unusual Bugs And What To Do If You Spot One

Have some unusual-looking pests invaded your home recently? Every homeowner knows the distress of spotting a strange insect crawling across the floor or wall. Here are some of the more unusual bugs that take up residence in homes in southern Georgia and northern Florida.

Box Elder Bugs

Box elder bugs have red or orange stripes on a black body. You’ll often find them hanging out near windows or other areas of your home with sun exposure. Most likely, they will enter your home between fall and the first part of spring. They are considered harmless to humans and pets, but they can omit an unpleasant odor if you crush one.

Earwigs

Humidity-loving earwigs are typically found in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. These reddish-brown bugs are considered a nuisance pest, meaning they are not harmful to humans and will not damage your home. Like box elder bugs, they can omit a foul odor if disturbed or crushed.

House Centipedes

With a somewhat frightening appearance, house centipedes have numerous legs along a slender body. Preferring a damp and dark environment, it’s more common to find them in your basement. But you may also see them in a bathroom or laundry room. They prey on other insects, injecting poisonous venom with their fangs. Despite this, they are not considered a threat to humans. However, if you are allergic to other insect bites or bee stings, their bite could be harmful.

Silverfish

You can often find silverfish in your kitchen in places like drawers, cupboards and under the sink. As their name implies, they have a fish-like shape and a silver-hued appearance. Once they take up residence in your home, they can do damage. They primarily feed on carbohydrates or starch, such as cereals, oats and flour. But they will also dine on paper, wallpaper and even clothing.

Springtails

Given their size and ability to jump several inches, homeowners often mistake springtails for fleas. They prefer damp areas, such as kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms and basements. Though it’s not common for them to invade a home, than can easily do so — especially in a dry spell. They can be a nuisance but will not harm you or your home.
